Reimagining Memories

By Citlali

Inspired by the experiences of mixed-status families, this panel intends to encapsulate the feeling of longing that many in mixed-status families face when traveling. The silhouettes throughout the collage are meant to represent the “missing piece” or family member left behind when those in mixed-status families travel internationally. This panel is meant to highlight the effects of restrictive immigration policy on mixed-status families. Initially, this panel started through the practice of photo-embroidery which was a way for me to physically stitch a family member into an old memory. As I began to work on the panel, I thought of this red string as a way to reimagine memories with loved ones, and furthermore mend the wounds that have been created by immigration policy.
