Family, Travel, and Transformation
By Breana
The restrictive nature of immigration policy that impacts mobility leads to disconnections in family relationships. For those who visited their home/ancestral country for the first time or after an extended period, it was a transformative experience. Through pláticas, participants expressed how transcending the U.S.-Mexico border changed connections with family members. This panel is an ode to this experience with black and white photos of family members that participants expressed they felt disconnected from prior to traveling. The accordion-style photos shift to a collage that can be seen from the right side to capture the transformation of the relationship. This reflects that participants saw a part of those people that can only be seen because of the traveling experience.
