      <image:title>Home - About the Project</image:title>
<image:caption>The Undocumented Student Equity Project (USEP) is dedicated to conducting rigorous empirical research to inform institutional policies and practices that will advance equity and inclusion for undocumented students. USEP was founded at the University of California, Irvine in 2015 as a collaborative effort among undocumented and allied undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. It continues as an active collaboration that now extends beyond our own campus. It also aims to support the professional development of emerging undergraduate and graduate scholar-activists. We hope that our research helps others in their efforts to create more equitable educational experiences for undocumented students.</image:caption>

She is a community-based researcher who is dedicated to advancing policy and practice models that will address the needs of immigrant families. Her research examines the intersection between social and structural factors associated with family wellbeing and health among immigrants. Cecilia is participating in this project as it has the potential to advance the needs of undocumented students across the UC and CSU system through systemic change; and supports emerging undocuscholars and scholars pursuing research with undocumented populations. She is co-investigator on the 2020 survey of UC and CSU undocumented students.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mariel Calva Hernandez is a fourth-year undergraduate student at University of California, Irvine. She is pursuing her B.A. in Public Health. Mariel is participating in this project because as an undocumented immigrant herself, she wants to identify the disparities other undocumented/immigrant students and their families face and inform programs that will aid them as they pursue higher education. As a USEP fellow, Mariel is analyzing data for a report on the impact of COVID-19 on college students who are undocumented and from mixed-status families.</image:caption>

Her research focuses on educational inequalities as experienced by marginalized youth across race/ethnicity and immigration status with a particular emphasis on youth’s agency in enacting social change. Karina is participating in this project because there is little data available to assess the effectiveness of undocumented student resources and services. She hopes the survey data will inform the enhancement of programs across all campuses to address existing inequities. <image:title>Journal Articles - Mediating Illegality: Federal, State, and Institutional Policies in the Educational Experiences of Undocumented College Students</image:title>
<image:caption>State and local government policies can make federally defined immigration status more or less consequential. Drawing on focus groups and interviews with undocumented students attending the University of California, we find that institutional policies work alongside state and local efforts to mediate the consequences of illegality for undocumented students. Although federal policies contribute to persistent barriers to academic engagement and professional development, we show that universities can intervene to improve educational experiences and opportunities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal Articles - Deconstructing Immigrant Illegality: A Mixed-Methods Investigation of Stress and Health Among Undocumented College Students</image:title>
<image:caption>The mere state of being undocumented is viewed as a general stressor, without considering actual levels of stress or identifying dimensions of documentation status that contribute to overall stress levels. Drawing on surveys and interviews with undocumented students at the University of California, we uncover the everyday manifestations of four dimensions of immigrant “illegality”: academic concerns, future concerns, financial concerns, and deportation concerns, and their association with reported stress levels and self-rated health.</image:caption>

She was drawn to this project because it aligned with her own self-discovery journey. For most of her life, she lived in the shadows and never felt like she belonged anywhere because of her immigration status. Being part of this research team and project allowed her to reconnect with her birth country and regain control of her migration story. This project has been an invaluable experience for her. <image:caption>A landscape was created to show the Mexico side and a U.S. side that signifies the physical border. The night sky and the day sky are parallels to one another. Each side contains art and poems by students and participants. They comment and discuss their dual identities and relationships to respective forms of belonging in the countries. The placement of the middle was decided to implement this idea of the geographical boundaries and reimagine it as a point of connection between the two panels, rather than division. It is the complete zine, which was created by Baruck, and was a form to reclaim certain narratives of the border, hopefully asserting identities that move beyond these confinements.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The left side of the panel exemplifies the city-like features throughout different parts of the United States. It demonstrates the idea of “the American dream” with such tall buildings and lots of opportunities for social climbing. Yet, even within such spaces that are considered “privileged” many still experience feelings such as imposter syndrome and are unsupported due to laws/policies.</image:caption>
